Band 9 IELTS essay sample
Some people are of the opinion that only the brightest students in a class should be given rewards. Others insist that students who are improving their grades should be the ones getting the rewards and appreciation. In my opinion, both of them deserve appreciation.
A student has to work really hard to be the class topper. They certainly deserve rewards. By rewarding the top students in a class, the school is also encouraging other students to work harder. When one student receives the price, others just below the topper will work doubly hard to be the winner the next time. Children seek appreciation. A prize is something that they can show off. It gives them immense pleasure to receive the prize and they will work harder to retain their topper badge. Needless to say, giving children prizes is a great way to motivate them to study harder.
At the same time, toppers are not the only students who deserve rewards. Other students who are making progress too should be rewarded. They are trying to improve their grades and they should be appreciated for that. These rewards will encourage them to continue to work harder and before long they could be the toppers of their class. If only the brightest students are given prizes, others will lose hope of ever getting a prize. Consequently, they may lack the inclination to study harder. By rewarding them as well, the school can motivate all students to work to improve their grades.
In short, rewards encourage students to work harder. The toppers should certainly receive prizes for their hard work. Those who are making progress too should be given prizes as a token of appreciation for their effort.
