This, that, these and those are demonstratives. When they are used alone, they are pronouns. When they are used with a noun, they are demonstrative adjectives.

Use this and that with singular nouns.

Use these and those with plural nouns.

Use this to point at a person or object near us.

Use that to point at a person or object far from us.

Use these to point at persons or objects near us.

Use those to point at persons or objects far from us.

When talking about experiences or similar ideas, use that and those with past tenses.
