Unreal Or Hypothetical Conditional Sentences Exercise

We can use type 2 or type 3 conditional sentences to talk about unreal or hypothetical conditional sentences.

Note that the type 2 conditional is also called second conditional and the type 3 conditional is also called third conditional.

In type 2 conditional, we use a simple past in the if-clause and would/could/might + first form of the verb in the main clause.

In type 3 conditional, we use a past perfect in the if clause and would/could/might + have + past participle in the main clause.

1. If she were confident, she could perform better in the interview. (In type 2 conditional, it is common to use were with singular subjects.

2. If you had asked politely, she would have helped you.

3. If I earned more money, I could live in a better environment.

4. If the driver hadn’t fallen asleep, the accident would not have happened.

5. If she had listened to me, she would not have landed herself in trouble.

6. If they had started a little earlier, they would not have missed the train.

7. If you took the tablets on time, you would feel better.

8. If she had spent her money wisely, she would not have incurred so much debt.

9. If you had been more careful, you would not have broken that vase.

10. If she found out about our plans, we would be in trouble.
