Option (a) is not correct. It should be: As we approached the swamp, we could hear the frogs croaking. When two clauses are joined together by a participle, they both should have the same subject.

Option (c) is not correct: It should be: In early colloquial villages, people had to depend on wood for fuel.

Option (c) is the answer. It is not grammatically correct: It should be: The argument neither explains what went wrong nor how it should be put right.
