An Unforgettable Day On The Beach

There were lots of people on the bench. The children played with the waves under the watchful eyes of their parents. The sea was calm. No one could imagine that the calm would be short lived.

I had started working as a lifeguard on that beach only a week ago. My job involved supervising the swimmers and issuing warnings whenever they ventured too farther into the sea. I hadn’t had any unpleasant experiences during the last few days and I thought that this day wouldn’t be different. But I was wrong. I had already noticed one boy among the children swimming in the sea. He must be 13 or 14 and often seemed acting recklessly. I am not sure if he had his parents or guardians with him. The first time he went deeper into the sea I warned him to return. He did but then he did the same again. Suddenly a huge wave came from nowhere. Children standing near the shore rushed back but this one boy didn’t seem to care. The wave hit the shore as the children cheered and then pulled him out into the sea. The parents raised an alarm and I knew I had to do something to try and save him. Without thinking anything I jumped right into the sea. Another massive wave brought him back and before it could pull him out again, I grabbed him by his clothes. I am a good swimmer. Yet, swimming against the waves, that too with a drowning boy, was hard. Luckily, I managed to do it. As soon as he reached the shore I administered him first aid. He had swallowed a lot of water but I did manage to rescue him. Everyone on the beach praised my courage and swimming skills. I felt elated not because I was praised but because I had saved a previous life.
