If-Clauses Worksheet for Class 8 CBSE
If expresses a condition – something which must happen first so that something else can happen.
There are mainly three types of if / conditional sentences.
- Type 1 conditional
- Type 2 conditional
- Type 3 conditional
Type 1 conditional is used to talk about real and possible situations. In type 1 conditional, we use a simple present tense in the if-clause and will / can / may + infinitive without to in the main clause.
- If I drop this glass, it will break.
Type 2 conditional is used to talk about imaginary situations. In type 2 conditional, we use a simple past tense in the if-clause and would / could / might + infinitive in the main clause.
- If I studied hard, I would get the first rank. (This is an imaginary situation. I didn’t study hard and I didn’t get the first rank.)
Type 3 conditional is used to talk about a purely hypothetical or impossible situation. In type 3 conditional, we use a past perfect tense in the if-clause and would / could / might + have + past participle in the main clause.
- I could have become the Prime Minister if I had run for election.
