Noun Phrases Worksheet For Class 8

A noun phrase is a group of words that serves the same purpose as a noun. Note that a noun can be the subject or object of a verb. A noun phrase will always have a noun which is the headword. It may also consist of determiners, adjectives, numbers or quantifiers.

Examples are given below.

The poor woman struggled to make a living.

Noun phrase: the poor woman; headword: woman

This noun phrase consists of the article the and the adjective poor.

A lot of people want to buy cars.

Noun phrase: a lot of people; headword: people

This noun phrase consists of the quantifier ‘a lot of’

She was wearing a lovely blue dress.

Noun phrase: a lovely blue dress; headword: dress

This noun phrase consists of the article a and the adjectives lovely and blue.

Those flowers are beautiful. (Noun phrase: those flowers; it consists of the determiner those and the noun flowers)

Note that adjectives, articles, determiners and quantifiers go before the noun. Hence, they are often called pre-modifiers.

A noun phrase may also contain postmodifiers. These are the words that go after the noun. The postmodifier is usually a prepositional phrase, an infinitive phrase or an ing phrase.

The man standing over there is my uncle.

Noun phrase: the man standing over there

Here the noun phrase consists of the ing phrase ‘standing over there’.

Who is that tall boy in the second row?

Noun phrase: that tall boy in the second row

Headword: boy

Premodifiers: that, tall

Postmodifiers: in the second row

I haven’t got anything to wear.

Noun phrase: anything to wear

Headword: anything

Postmodifier: to wear
